For the first time since their declaration, the three Rio Conventions “Biodiversity” (CBD), “Climate Change” (UNFCC)”, and “Land Degradation” (UNCCD) had their parties convene in tandem over the last quarter 2023.  This provides an opportunity to break through decades of addressing them as independent problems and map the synergies between the actions required to address the great challenges each of the conventions represent. In particular, it is time to recognize “land degradation”, which has been largely siloed as an issue affecting only countries with deserts within their territory, as a problem that interacts, as a cause and consequence, with climate change and biodiversity loss.  Whereas the interactions between climate change and biodiversity loss were explored through a first joint assessment of the IPCC and IPBES, the interactions with land degradation remain yet to be explored.

In this event distinguished speakers will present recent results and policy arguments to connect the three conventions, followed by a panel discussion, where we will review recent developments in each of the three conventions and discuss the scientific basis for the interlinks between them, to identify triple-win actions that may help concurrently advance their goals.
