 Significant progress with climate adaptation and combatting the worst effects of climate change will only be possible if governments, companies and communities work together across borders towards achieving our SDG goals. 
 
 The 197 countries (plus the European Union) signatory to the UNCCD have committed to work together to find solutions for environmental conservation and sustainable land management. But the geopolitics of today point towards global fragmentation rather than global integration. While governments squabble and become more inward looking, communities and societies at large grapple with increased desertification and water shortages, and international companies decry regulatory divergence and lack of financing for climate solutions in the places that need it the most.
 
To inform our discussions at COP16 and agree on the most impactful global actions to be taken, we need to first understand and acknowledge the challenges we face in the current global environment. In this session we will set the scene by examining the intersection of geopolitics, business and climate to identify the challenges that will need to be overcome to achieve meaningful action with respect to our global environmental goals.
